the Saxons — саксы, группа германских племен, которая обитала между нижними течениями рек Рейн (Rhine) и Эльба (Elbe). В 5 — 6 вв. в завоевании Британии вместе с саксами участвовали и англы, давшие название и стране, и народности. В результате англосаксонского завоевания кельтской Британии к концу 6 в. там образовался ряд англосаксонских королевств: Кент (Kent), Уэссекс (Wessex), Суссекс (Sussex), Эссекс (Essex), Восточная Англия (East Anglia), Нортумбрия (Northumbria), Мерсия (Mersey [`mə:zi]).
